Innovation Academy holds high academic standards for all students, with a focus
on challenging students to be thoughtful problem solvers, effective
communicators, active community members and self-directed in their
academic and social pursuits. At Innovation Academy we are dedicated to making real-world connections between the content we are teaching and the lives our students lead, to working with families to personalize each student's education, and to helping students become comfortable presenting themselves and their work in public. "My child is finally challenged at school and not just coasting by with all 'A's and perfect papers." -- Innovation Academy parent. The school's block schedule at both the middle and high-school levels allow for rigorous, in-depth learning to occur in the classroom in longer project-based classes. Teachers are dedicated to pushing learning beyond mere content, working on the skills and habits of mind that help students succeed. Our inclusion based model ensures that all students access the curriculum at a higher level. In project work, students work collaboratively to take on complex, multi-faceted, real-world tasks. Throughout the curriculum, students are pushed to think systemically and holistically about problems. Working with families and students on personal development is another key aspect of our program. Innovation Academy report cards include not just grades, but also information about a student's progress in developing sound habits of mind. In addition, each student works closely with his or her parents and a faculty member at the school to develop personal goals for each school year. The school helps my child develop public speaking and critical thinking skills, constantly reinforces self-direction and accountability, and engages my child with creative and interactive curriculum. --Innovation Academy parent Students come to see presenting their learning in public as an integral part of their education at Innovation Academy, starting in the 5th grade with Quality Night presentations and continuing through to Senior Projects. By the time a student graduates from Innovation Academy, he or she will have presented work repeatedly not only to teachers and peers, but also to adults from within our community. As a result, our students develop a comfort talking to adults about academics that is rare to see in college students, let alone middle and high schoolers. Innovation Academy holds a high standard for every student by ensuring that all students share the same “common intellectual mission” of attending and succeeding in college and beyond.
