Within fifth grade, teachers use diagnostics to assess students and flexible grouping within the classroom to meet student needs. Math classes are tiered in sixth, seventh and eighth grade as they prepare for success in high school mathematics.
The goal is to challenge all students to apply their mathematics knowledge in their lives by asking thoughtful questions, responding to others’ inquiries, and critically assessing and effectively presenting their own work. We focus on collaborative learning, technology integration, effective communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills.
Building a Foundation
The Mathematics curriculum utilizes a wide variety of resources for students to develop a well rounded foundation. Curricular design for all grade levels reflects the standards outlined in the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Over the course of the year, students develop skills related to the five major strands: Number Sense, Algebraic Patterns, Geometry, Measurement, and Probability/Statistics.
