Last week, IACS Spanish teachers Ofelin Tortorelli, Jose Lopez, Gale Stafford, and Carrie Tawadros presented at the 2016 ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) convention. Their presentation was titled “Learning by Doing: Project Based learning in a proficiency based classroom.” Around 30 teachers from different parts of the country came to learn how to develop projects using different tools, such as ACTFL standards, state curriculum frameworks, AAPPL (ACTFL Assessment of performance toward proficiency in language) tools, and the Buck Institute’s Gold elements. Our teachers explained how to incorporate all these tools when developing projects and still maintain the immersion program throughout all proficiency levels. Attendees were also able to get assistance on possible projects that they could develop for their own classes. Congratulations to our Spanish department!
