Dear IACS Community-

This is an exciting, busy, and sometime stressful time of the year for all us at the high school. Seniors are down to their last 30 days of classes and many are still trying to decide on their plans for life after high school. Sophomores have finished English Language Arts MCAS testing, but they still get to look forward to Math MCAS testing in May. All students in grades 9-11 have been making course requests in the Aspen/X2 portal for next year. Students in 8th grade will be making their course requests in early May. Parents can review these requests in their Family Portal (click HERE for a tutorial on how to view them). And at the same time students are busy with these items, they are also preparing for POL’s and Senior Projects, rehearsing for the next drama production, or participating in spring sports! But wait, there’s more! Just this week, our Model UN Team led by Ms. Gonsalo, participated in a conference at UMASS Lowell and was recognized as the 3rd best delegation to compete! Jennifer Schultz and Leticia Freire both won the title of BEST delegate in their committees! Jen, representing Japan in the UN Women's council, and Leticia in the World Health Organization, were both presented plaques and their committee's official gavel in honor of their outstanding work. Carter Morgan, representing Japan, and Noah Doucot, the Czech Republic, also did a phenomenal job.  Both won Honorable Mention awards in their committee, the UN Environmental Programme, receiving certificates for their outstanding work in debate and resolution writing. Great job representing IACS so well!

Hopefully you were able to see all of the excellent student work on display at last week’s Spring Exhibition Night. The science, art, music, and English projects were all very impressive and I want to thank all of the students and teachers for doing such a nice job of showcasing their work. The night also included beautiful performances by the Concert Choir and Chorale, under the direction of Ms. Lane. Additionally, seniors Ariana Schmidt and Elisa Alexander, as their applied piece for senior project, conducted two musical performances that were great examples of why we place such value on the program. Students (and teachers) that make up the Choice Block Garage Band also performed several songs at Exhibition Night. Click HERE for one of their selections. Garage Band is under the direction of Mr. Sciolla and includes Ariana Schmidt, Isaiah Krehbiel, Mr. Spiro, Maddy Premru, Elijah McTiernan, Sage Paolillo, Meg Weldon, Marc Montesanti, Mr. Morse, and Jimmy Foye.

As the weather heats up, so do the activities around the high school. All students will attend a Substance Abuse Prevention assembly on Tuesday that will be led by Bill Phillips of the New Beginnings Program in Framingham. He has presented at schools across the state and will hopefully have a positive impact with our students as well. The second set of progress reports will be available for viewing in the Aspen/X2 portal over April vacation. Even with all of the activities going on, it is important for our students to remember that their academics always need to be their number one priority.

Lastly, a big thank you to everyone that attended last Friday’s Casino Night fundraiser for IACA. The evening was an amazing success, and it earned over $17,000 for IACS!  Tremendous thanks goes to the lead organizer, Heather Landis, and her crew of volunteers:

    Seasonal  Allergy Update from the Health Office:         

    Allergy season is just around the corner! For some of you, it has already arrived! Please be reminded that the Health Office does not stock over the counter allergy medication.  If you would like to bring in allergy medicine for your child to be kept here in the Health Office, you are welcome to do so.  Please send the medicine in the original package , with a signed note for administration.

    Also, it is important to remind students that when coming in from the outdoors, such as after recess, they should immediately go to the bathroom and wash their hands and faces.  This is an excellent way to remove any pollen that has collected on them while outside, and greatly reduces subsequent eye irritation.

  • Eighth Grade Semi-Formal: We're starting to plan our Eighth Grade Semi! What a blast for the kids! Here is a message from Donna Martin, who is chairing the committee as she has done for the past three years.The semi is on Saturday June 10th at 7:00.  We will be needing people to help pass out food and chaperone the dance ( this is only open to parents who do not have 8th graders).  If you can’t make it that night we could use help with food donations, decoration ideas, help with invitations, favors etc.  Please email me as soon as possible if you are interested  

  • Last Bash planning is starting up! If you aren't familiar with Last Bash – this is the safe, all night, lock-in party for Seniors that takes place the night of Graduation!  If you are interested in helping to plan the event (scheduled for June 3, 2017), please email Holly Ballam and Lynn Smith at lastbash@innovationcharter. org . We have a meeting scheduled for 7pm at Panera in Drum Hill for April 12th.

  • * July 10-July 14: Drama Camp 8:30-3:30 daily with a performance of Ghostbusters on Friday night

    * July 17-July 21: Glee Camp 8:30-3:30 daily with a performance of songs and scenes from School of Rock on Friday night

    * July 24-July 28: Improv Camp 8:30-3:30 daily with a performance created ON THE SPOT by the campers on Friday night

    **The first ten Improv Camp students finishing grades 8 through 12 have the option of going to Broadway to see Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 on the Wednesday of Improv Camp! (Unfortunately, the NYC component of Drama Camp and Glee Camp trips are full.)

    Families often ask us what they can do at home to help their child be prepared and do their best on the day of the exam. Please be sure your child is well rested and eats a healthy breakfast on testing days. Remind your child that the tests are not timed and s/he is well prepared for the exams. We want our students to remember to go back into the passages as they work through the tests and to check all of their work prior to finishing. Be certain to arrive to school on time. Once a testing session has begun, students who are tardy are not permitted to enter the testing room. For more detailed information about MCAS, see our website here.     Save the Date- Quality Night 5/11

    Quality Night for Grades 5 and 7 is scheduled for May 11th from 6:00-7:15 PM. Attendance is mandatory for all fifth and seventh graders as a promotion requirement as students get important practice in formal presentation as well as feedback, leading up to their sixth and eighth grade jury presentation. Please mark your calendars. Quality Night/jury prep time  will be Monday, May 1st and Tuesday, May 2nd. Students preparing for Quality Night should bring note cards, art supplies, and a poster boards to school on prep day.

    Jury Volunteers Needed

    Sixth and eighth grade students will be making their jury portfolio presentations this spring and we are looking for community members to sit in on the presentations. Staff members act as assessors for the presentations; we have found that it enriches the presentation to have a second adult present to both listen and ask questions of the student presenter. It’s also a lot of fun and a terrific way to learn more about student work at IACS! We are looking for volunteers during the week of May 30th and June 5th that have one or more hours free during the school day to attend a presentation. Please sign up with the main office the next time you stop in or email to sign up for a time slot. Spread the word to grandparents, neighbors, etc. that you think might be interested!

    Save the Date- Events for 8th graders

    The 8th Grade Moving Up Assembly will be held in our school auditorium from 8:15-9:15 am on Monday, June 19th. Eighth grade students have a ceremony including a retrospective account of middle school written by students and recognition of students’ completion of middle school. This

    will be followed by a continental breakfast for students and their guests. Due to space constraints in the auditorium, students are limited to no more than 2 guests at the assembly. Please respect this rule to ensure all that attend can be seated.

    8th Grade Semi-Formal: Saturday, June 10th from 7:00- 10:00 PM. This is always a fun night, and we are hoping to have 100% student participation. At school, we will share plans with students so that they may look forward to this last celebration with their eighth grade classmates, while at the same time ensuring that students understand how this is distinguishable from a formal event, like a prom. Girls may opt to wear a simple party dress. Gowns, short mini-dresses or other revealing dresses are not permitted. Boys may opt to wear a collared dress shirt and dress pants. Tuxedos are not permitted. Limousines are not permitted. Tickets will be on sale closer to the event and details of this fun event will be discussed with students as the dance approaches.

    The  March  IACS Student Health 101 and the accompanying Student Advocate for parents and supporters are now available online. For the months of March and April you can enter your student to win $500 simply by reading an article and answering a few questions!  We have already had a $100…let’s get us a few $500 winners!!
