The Hawk: December 6, 2019

December 5, 2019 6:48 pm

Week ending December 6

Dear IACS Community,

This year the high school at IACS has offered a new course, Wellness in the Wilderness, co-facilitated by High School Wellness Teacher, Kyle Thornton and High School Social Worker, Debi Rogers. The goal of this class was to use the combined expertise of these two individuals to create a course that worked to build a sense of community, resilience, and self-awareness in a student population of diverse social emotional needs. Through the use of the wilderness as its primary setting, this class incorporated a unique blend of group and individual-based activities coupled with intentional reflections. There has been consistent emphasis on connecting the activities to the adversity found in real life situations. Some of the activities done so far have included: using the ropes course, helping our facilities crew with trail maintenance, and kayaking on the Nashua river. The hope was to increase students’ opportunities to access the wilderness in our backyard and recognize that nature itself was healing for our minds, bodies, and hearts.

Presenting at Quality Night is a promotion requirement. Fifth and seventh graders will present twice throughout the school year. Sixth and eighth graders will present in December and turn their focus to preparing for their gateway jury presentation in the spring. Family participation at Quality Night is essential in providing students individualized feedback about their work. Please do not hesitate to invite other guests (grandparents, aunts/uncles, neighbors, etc.) that are interested in supporting your child and seeing some examples of the project-based work IACS students do. Students should dress up

Mark your calendars:

Students have been signing-up for how they would like to use the two, forty-minute blocks of time that we have created for a special modified schedule on Tuesday next week. Students have the option of seeing one of their teachers, going to the library or auditorium for a quiet study, going to the cafeteria for group work, participating in restorative yoga, volunteering to be a peer tutor, or signing out if they have senior privileges. Save the Date – Thursday, Jan 9th!

Exhibition Night will be held on Thursday, January 9th. Join us as the school is transformed into a gallery of student exhibits and presentations. All students will be contributing at least one piece. This is a great way to see the project-based work that our students create during the school year. Come celebrate our students’ achievements.

  • Come early for a multicultural potluck in the cafe from 5-6pm. Sign up to bring a dish!

  • Exhibits & Presentations begin at 6pm.

  • The Combined Choral & Chorale will give us a quick preview of their upcoming winter concert.

  • Notes from the College Counseling Office

Shortly after the Thanksgiving break, sophomores and juniors will receive their PSAT results, so students should be checking their email! At the start of the second semester, our college counselor will soon begin working with the junior class as they prepare to think about transitioning from IACS. College-bound students should study for either the SAT or ACT (usually, the spring of junior year is the first time to test). Here is a guide to SAT/ACT Prep Options!

    Gratitude Corner

IACS is incredibly grateful to everyone who made Giving Tuesday a big success. We exceeded our goal for that day and are more than halfway to our Annual Giving Campaign goal. We received donations from $1 to $10,000 from current families, alumni families and staff and we value and appreciate every single one. We hope that some of you were able to use our new widget to determine if your employer offers a match for your donation. If you’d like any assistance with that process please contact Heather at

    Thank you for your support.

Didn’t have a chance to give but you’d still like to?
