The Hawk: February 2, 2018

IACS Newsletter for the week ending February 2, 2018

Dear IACS Community,

The well-known proverb “It takes a village to raise a child” has been widely quoted over the years. It speaks to the value of community support in helping to navigate the challenges of raising children, most especially in our hurried, highly stimulative, world. Innovation Academy recognizes and embraces the home/school relationship and the positive impact it can have in fostering a generation of responsible, healthy and globally aware young adults.

To strengthen that partnership, the Innovation Academy Community Association (IACA) and the Wellness Department have joined forces. Through the IACA facebook page, IACA and the Wellness Department will provide timely posts that will not only connect you to happenings in the IACS community, but will also serve as a source of information and a forum for discussion.

Two recent posts include articles on the struggles of middle school friendships, (with advice for parents), and understanding how today’s teens, the “iGens,” are different from past generations. I hope you will consider connecting with us via the IACA facebook page, and that you will use this resource as an additional support and source of awareness of some of the issues parents encounter today.

In partnership,

The Wellness Department

Advisory Service

During mid-February, all middle school advisories will have some extended advisory time to work on service projects. For some advisories, this will be a continuation of projects begun in the fall, while others will embark on new endeavours. We will work with many local partners, including visits to local nursing homes, The Wish Project, Merrimack Valley Food Back, Girls Inc, and work with the Lowell Humane Society and Operation Delta Dog. Ask your child what their group is working on and stay tuned for some photos of advisories in action soon!

Ms. Kelly, HS Dean of Students, will visit advisories on the Monday before the advisory’s scheduled visit to give students an overview and help them select classes for their shadow day. On their scheduled visit day, they will go on a tour and attend several classes. Later that week, two HS students will visit their advisory to answer any questions students have post-visit about the transition from middle school to high school.
