The Hawk: February 6, 2016

February 6, 2016 7:00 am

“The Hawk”

Just when it looked like spring had arrived in early February, winter decides to make an appearance with our first snow day. Our Community Association and school administration are exploring possible make up dates for last night's "Embrace Winter" event.

I would like to invite everyone to the Boys Varsity Basketball game Saturday night to celebrate Senior Night. The boys are having a great season and they will be playing at Rogers Middle School in Lowell from 8:00-9:30.

Even though we are just past the halfway point in the school year, we have already begun preparations for scheduling students for next year. One change for next year will be with the weekly bell schedule. The faculty has decided to return to a model similar to last year. This schedule (which you can see here) allows for more frequent contact with advisories and more time on learning for our students. Students will appreciate having lunches with their entire grade again, but unfortunately there is only room for one choice block. We will still be able to offer some of our new choice blocks like Driver’s Education and SAT Prep, but it may mean some class time might need to occur after school. A major reason for this change is to avoid some of the scheduling problems that occurred as a result of having advisory in the regular rotation of classes.

Depending on when a student had advisory meant that they could be blocked from taking certain classes that they wanted. Next year, advisory will rotate with lunch block which will alleviate this problem. Teachers are finalizing course offerings for next year and there are some exciting new offerings across the departments that you will be learning about in March. The next couple of months are especially busy as both students and faculty have the following events to tackle: Endersession planning, scheduling for next year, MCAS, ILP conferences, and probably several other things I am forgetting. Given all of this, today is a perfect day to slow down and enjoy one of the reasons we all love living in New England.

Best –

Conferences will take place February 24th and March 9th. One of our school’s accountability goals is to achieve 90% or higher participation at ILP conferences from families. ILP conferences are an important way for students to reflect upon their learning and set goals with feedback from their family and teachers.
