IACS Newsletter for the week ending January 12, 2018
Dear IACS Families:
As we have headed back to school, students have busily been wrapping up their Semester 1 work. The high school closed Semester 1 today. At the middle school, we’ve opted to add one day to the end of the semester due to the recent school cancellations. This will mean that the last day of Semester 1 at the middle school will be Wednesday, January 17th. Semester 1 Assessments (Report Cards) will be distributed roughly 2 weeks later. Students and families will receive an email when they are published to the portal.
Semester 2 will bring some shifts to student schedules at both the middle school and the high school. At the middle school, students will be shifting their semester-long classes. Students that started the year in Science will shift to Social Studies (and vice versa). Students that started the year in Health and Challenge will move to Art and Music (and vice versa). High school students will meet in advisories for the start of the day to pick up their Semester 2 schedules.
Thank you for your support in helping your child close out the first semester strongly and starting their new coursework on a positive note. A reminder that school is closed on Monday and Tuesday for Martin Luther King Day (Monday) and Tuesday (Staff Professional) and we’ll be returning to school on Wednesday for a full day of school.
We are looking forward to a full and enriching 2018 here at IACS and wish the same to your family!

New! Community Book Club
In our new Community Book Club, we will be picking a book and discussing it. For January, we have chosen the book Between the World and Me by Ta-Nehisi Coates. This book is Coates’s explanation of our Nation’s history and current state to his young son. Mainly, Coates confronts cultural issues and asks questions such as: Have we come as far as we think we have regarding questions of race?
We plan to run our first book club meeting on Tuesday, January 30th after school in the library. Students, teachers, and families are all welcome! Food will be provided! We will be meeting monthly on Tuesday afternoons from 3:15-4:15. Once we complete our first book, together we’ll pick our next one to read! Copies of our books will be available in the library to be checked out. Please have the book, or most of read, prior to this meeting. You don’t have to buy a copy of this book, just have ideas ready to be discussed!

Sometimes you come across students recording a music video of Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ on a Prayer” on the ukulele while in the Lost and Found with very serious expressions and it causes one to smile.
