March 3, 2017
Even though it is only March, the teachers of Innovation Academy have already begun thinking about new courses for next year and ways to improve existing courses and curriculum. One recent example of this relates to our Biology class. All of our sophomores take Biology and teacher Ashley Young has recently received a significant grant that will open up new lab experiences for our students.
The grant is from the MassBioEd Foundation, whose mission is to increase student access to lab-based activities in the life sciences and biotechnology and inspire students to consider the possibility of a career in the life sciences. The grant will provide lab equipment to implement two new biotechnology labs in the 10th grade biology courses this spring.
As part of the genetics unit, all 10th grade students will learn basic biotechnology skills that allow for the study of living things at the molecular level. Students will put these skills to use in a lab where they will use restriction enzymes to cut apart bacterial DNA at specific sites and then visualize the cut DNA using gel electrophoresis. This lab will supplement the discussion of genetic engineering as students will have hands-on experience with the lab techniques genetic engineers use.
Biology honors students will perform a second lab in which they will transfer a gene for antibiotic resistance into a bacteria strain that is susceptible to the antibiotic. They will test if their transformation is successful by growing the transformed bacteria in the presence of the antibiotic.
Congratulations to Ashley Young on receiving this grant and I will have more information on new course offerings for next year in the coming weeks.

We can also use any size you can get (toiletry sized or larger). We will be collecting these in the Kyles room (512 in Landberg Hall) up until Tuesday, March 21, 2017. Our advisory will also be making rounds on Fridays during advisory time to collect items. Thanks so much in advance!
