The Hawk: October 11, 2019

October 10, 2019 6:48 pm

IACS Hawk

Week ending October 11th

Dear IACS Families:

One way our staff teaches students about our school’s mission is through our four school outcomes of self-direction, problem-solving, effective communication, and community membership. These outcomes are embedded in our day-to-day life at school through project-based work, our advisory program, and incorporated into presentations of learning.

Over the course of last year, a staff committee worked to streamline and better define our school outcomes, so that our community has a more clearly defined goals we are striving to achieve with our graduates. This is one of the goals of our IACS 2025 strategic plan.

We are excited by this work and how it is taking shape in structures such as ILP conferences, digital portfolios, and end-of-year presentations. We are using this document to help bring common language to students and build their ability to reflect on their growth in these skills over time. As students create their portfolios later this year, this work will be more visible to families as well and we would encourage you to ask your child to share their portfolio work with you.

Enjoy the long weekend!

In partnership,

Melissa Kapeckas

Middle School Principal

Students worked in collaboration in Algebra to perform an experiment to determine the relationship between the number of layers of paper, on a paper bridge, and the number of pennies that the bridge can support without buckling.
