IACS Hawk

Week ending October 18th

Dear IACS Families,

Welcome to a fresh academic year! I write today with some information and an invitation.

When you first see an organization from the outside, it’s not always immediately clear who does what.

At IACS, the Board of Trustees takes care of the big picture. They do this by ensuring that good policies are in place to guide everything that happens at the school and then they check to ensure that these policies are being followed. These policies have evolved from the core values of the school and have been gathered from the community of families who are at the heart of the school. These big picture values include questions like: What is the difference in the world this school should create? How will we know if IACS has been successful? What are more important, creativity and ingenuity, or technical skills and discipline?

These questions are very different than the ones you might ask a teacher or administrator regarding day-to-day situations in the classroom, or the general maintenance and operations of the school. While other public school committees or boards might get involved with operational decisions or issues, our board governs with an outward focus and leaves day-to-day decisions to our head of school, staff and faculty. For operational questions, one would go directly to faculty and administration, particularly our Head of School, Greg Orpen (gorpen@innovationcharter.org).

That said, your family’s input about big picture perspective is highly valuable to the Board of Trustees so it can do its job of directing and protecting IACS. Do you have a big picture question, value, or perspective to share with the Trustees? How should students benefit by attending IACS? We want to know. Please take a moment to e-mail your thoughts to us at bot@innovationcharter.org.

This year at our Board of Trustee meetings we will be reviewing our “big picture” questions, checking in on the operational strategic plan, and discussing a variety of topics to determine our future strategic vision for IACS. Our schedule of meetings and the individual focus of each will be publicized ahead of time on our web pages and in IACS’s weekly electronic newsletter, The Hawk. In addition, from time to time, we will solicit formal feedback through electronic surveys* so that we might log the opinions of our families. We invite you to participate in these conversations at meetings, through these surveys or by grabbing a trustee in the hallways at campus events. (We’ll be wearing oval name tags).

We look forward to a year of fruitful conversation.

Best regards,

Paulette Bruneau Brooks P’19
