IACS Newsletter for the week ending October 26th
Dear Families:
As I write this letter, our high school students are finishing up their Spirit Week. From my window I can see students in their class colors of white, red, blue, and black eating lunch on the patio getting ready for the culminating event of Fall Fest, coordinated by their student government. School spirit is simple and also important as it helps students and staff connect and feel pride about being at our school. School spirit unites us.
Next week, middle school students will be participating in a walkathon as a fundraiser for IACS. Students on the Self-Direction and Effective Communication teams will walk on Monday, 10/22 and students on the Problems-Solving and Community Membership team will walk on Tuesday, 10/23 during advisory. Awards and prizes will be given to the top 3 individual fundraisers as well as the top advisory for each team (as well as a prize for the advisory that shows the most school spirit). Students may use either a paper form or online fundraising page to collect donations until October 22nd. Proceeds from this event will go toward updating our campus trails to increase walkability, while adding fitness and mindfulness stations to improve wellness and balance. The walk-a-thon will lead into Thursday afternoon’s Pumpkin Run. In addition to the race, there will be trunk or treat and other activities for the whole family. For more information go to the Pumpkin Run page on our website or contact Heather Landis. Show your IACS spirit!
Best,

Good work Destramp Advisory:
You’ve never seen more enthusiastic car washers and vacuumers than the Destramp Advisory! They nearly doubled their goal and are sending a donation of $392 from the proceeds of their carwash to the Lawrence Police Department to support families impacted by the gas explosions. Thank you to everyone who supported this event!

This week the Spanish class "Street Art" took a trip to El Punto, Salem, MA to see the murals we have been learning about in class. El Punto Urban Art Museum is "a social justice art program focused on breaking down invisible socioeconomic barriers". All of the 50+ murals are on walls of rent-restricted buildings, and collectively aim to raise pride in the community and increase business opportunities for people living there. Students have been studying the neighborhood and the positive effects of the murals in the neighborhood, so on two beautiful (if chilly) days, we went to see for ourselves!
